Positron emission tomography (PET) is a very effective medical imaging modality. It is used heavily in clinical oncology, dementias, mapping of the normal human brain and heart function, as well as supporting drug development and cancer research.
However, the radioisotopes used in PET are short-lived and can not be imported from outside the country as the time from production to use is too short.
These short-lived radioisotopes can be domestically produced by the establishment of a 30 MeV cyclotron.
