Agriculture Vision & Road map

Agriculture Vision

Almost every industrialized nation began its economic ascent with an agricultural transformation. Therefore, we are determinded to improve the lives of all Sudanese citizens, particularly those living in poverty, by supporting the nation’s agricultural sector to reduce malnutrition, create jobs, raise incomes, and kick-start the economy on a path to middle-income growth.

Top Challenges

Neglection of the Agricultural Sector

The agriculture sector has been neglected, examples of which are seen in the Al-Nafra and Al-Nahda projects, and attempts to privatize the Gezira scheme were ill advised.

Credit Practices

Many traditional farmers earn insufficient cash to cover requirements during the winter and planting costs the following season which forces them to obtain credit from a merchant who takes a portion of the crops as a repayment.

Constraints on Production

Severe constraints on increased agricultural production include failure to introduce improved and treated seeds for most crops in over a decade. As a result, farmers find it uneconomical to plant some crops for commercial sale since poor seeds produce unacceptable yields.

Inadequate Transportation

Sudan’s transportation problems are formidable. Shortages of fuel, vehicles, and spare parts are widespread and constant. With only 2,400 kilometers of paved roads an inadequate railways system, Sudan faces the task of bridging the immense distance between production centers and consumption and export points.

Pre- & Post- Harvest Pests

Both pre- and post- harvest pests substantially reduce the production of many crops. Senior agricultural officials estimate that up to 25% of the sesame and sorghum crops is lost because of the ravages of pests.

Desert Encroachment & Cropland Degradation

Because most of Sudan is  a semi-desert, it is susceptible to pressures from overgrazing and deforestation. The Sahelian drought of the early 1970s was disastrous, and since then, population nd livestock numbers have exceeded the carrying capacity of the land.

Top Recommendations

Short-Term

Increasing Investments

Increase investment through enhanced international cooperation in rural infrastructure, agriculture, research and extension services, R&D, and plant and livestock gene banks to improve the country’s agricultural productivity capacity.

Managing Trade Restrictions

Correct and prevent trade restrictions and distortions in world agricultural markets through the parallel elimination of all forms of agricultural export subsidies and all export measures with equivalent effect.

Ensure Proper Functioning of Food Commodity Markets

Adopt measures to ensure the proper functioning of food commodity markets and their derivatives, and facilitate timely access to market information including on food reserves, to help limit extreme food price volatility.

Long-Term

End Hunger & Ensure Access to Food All Year Long

By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, particularly the poor and those in vulnerable situations including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year around.

Focus on Small-Scale Food Producers

By 2030, double the agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, in particular women, family farmers, and fishers through ensuring equal and secure access to land, providing additional productive inputs and resources, knowledge, financial services, as well as market opportunities for value addition and non-farm employment.

Create Sustainable Food Production Systems

By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient Agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding, and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality.
